Psychadelic Cabin

 

Large enough for a full size bed, this quilt is sized 5'7" x 7'

Micro vs. macro, subtle vs. bold, cool vs. hot. Which is better? Does one win? Getting deep there, buddy - maybe you're tripping too hard. 

The quilt top pictured on the bottom was an unfinished vintage piece featuring many 16 patch squares and long border strips all made from old flour sacks. Dominated by pinks and blues and dotted with black, the overall effect is a pixelated field of bubbly refreshment.

This preexisting quilt top set some initial parameters that I set for myself: create an opposing side that incorporated the pale blues and pinks and use a black border/binding to tie the two sides together. But, make it warmer, stronger, and bolder. 

The resulting piece brings in fiery red, mustard, and orange with mostly solid fabrics, all thrifted or inherited from friends. I started with a loose improvisational take on the log cabin motif, building in from the four corners and filling in where fabric scraps naturally sized together. The final effect is a somewhat disoriented geometry, a grid with movement. So here, you're in a log cabin in the woods, delving into some acid laden personal reflection,  watching the walls melt and the flowers outside dance like popcorn, wondering how it all beautifully balances out....
